The most performant sow units stand out by the attention invested around farrowing. Indeed, several strategies enable a good lactation start for the sow and piglets survival past the critical period. This lecture will suggest very practical techniques, accessible to all. Whether you have 100 or 6000 sows, you will find at least one strategy to implement on your farm.

Louis-Philippe Roy is Chair of the Éleveurs de porcs des Deux-Rives. In 2013, he completed a non-family-related farm transfer of a 200 sow farrow-to-finish farm in the Bellechasse region. Having previously worked in a breeding farm in Bas-St-Laurent, and another one in Beauce, he gained experience in swine herd management, and developed a keen interest for performance and production techniques optimization. He set up, with his sidekick Jean-Philippe Martineau, nutritionist, a pork industry podcast (le Porcast) aiming to improve agricultural practices on farms. With his involvement in the Éleveurs de porcs organization, he then developed an interest in collective marketing and the pork sector by his presence in the executive committee and other committees.
Jean-Philippe Martineau was introduced to swine production at an early age since his father owned a 720 sow farrow-to-finish farm. He has a master's degree in animal science from Laval University, in Québec, specializing in the impacts of organic minerals on sow performance.
He began his career at Hylife in Manitoba, where he was part of the nutrition and R&D team.
Back in Québec in 2017, he joined the nutrition team of the Groupe Cérès. He is co-owner of Nutrition Athéna (a division of Groupe Cérès in Québec).
